Replace Fireplace Surround Tile: A Step-By-Step Guide

A fireplace is a focal point of any room, and the surround tile can make a big difference in its overall style. If your fireplace surround tile is outdated or damaged, replacing it is a great way to update the look of your room. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you replace fireplace surround tile:

Step 1: Safety First

Before you begin, turn off the gas or electricity to your fireplace. Let the fireplace cool completely before proceeding.

Step 2: Remove the Old Tile

Use a pry bar to carefully remove the old tile. Start at the top of the surround and work your way down. Be careful not to damage the fireplace surround.

Step 3: Clean the Fireplace Surround

Once the old tile is removed, clean the fireplace surround with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris.

Step 4: Apply Thinset Mortar

Using a notched trowel, apply a thin layer of thinset mortar to the fireplace surround. The mortar should be about 1/4 inch thick.

Press the new tile into the thinset mortar. Use a level to make sure the tile is level. Tap the tile lightly with a rubber mallet to set it in place.
