Light the Pilot On Your Gas Fireplace: A Step-by-Step Guide

A gas fireplace adds warmth and ambiance to your home, but only if it's working properly. If your gas fireplace won't ignite, it's likely that the pilot light has gone out. Fortunately, relighting the pilot light is a relatively simple task that you can do yourself with a few basic tools.

Step 1: Safety First

Before you begin, safety should be your top priority. Ensure that your gas fireplace is turned off and the gas supply valve is closed. Allow the fireplace to cool down completely before proceeding.

Step 2: Locate the Pilot Light

The pilot light is typically located behind a small access panel on the bottom or side of the fireplace. Remove the panel to access the pilot assembly.

Step 3: Check the Thermocouple

The thermocouple is a safety device that prevents gas from flowing into the fireplace if the pilot light is not lit. Gently push the thermocouple against the pilot flame to see if it clicks and opens the gas valve. If it does not, replace the thermocouple.

Step 4: Light the Pilot

Use a long-necked lighter or match to light the pilot light. Hold the flame near the pilot assembly and press the pilot ignition button or turn the ignition knob. You may need to hold the button or knob for a few seconds until the pilot light stays lit without assistance.

Step 5: Adjust the Pilot Flame

Once the pilot light is burning, adjust the flame size by turning the adjustment screw on the pilot assembly. The flame should be about 1 inch long and blue in color. If the flame is yellow or too small, the gas supply may be too low. If the flame is too large, it may blow out.

Step 6: Reassemble the Access Panel

Once the pilot light is stable, replace the access panel and secure it tightly.

Step 7: Turn on the Gas Supply and Fireplace

Slowly open the gas supply valve and turn on the fireplace. The main burner should ignite automatically and begin heating the room.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If the pilot light won't stay lit, ensure that the thermocouple is clean and securely connected.
  • If the fireplace won't ignite, check that the gas supply is turned on and the gas valve is open.
  • If you smell gas, turn off the gas supply and fireplace immediately and contact a qualified technician.
