How to Spray Paint a Brass Fireplace Insert
This article will show you all of the steps necessary to get a quality finish when painting a brass fireplace insert.
Materials Needed
Safety First
Before beginning, ensure you have proper ventilation by opening windows and doors. Wear safety gloves and a mask to protect yourself from fumes and dust.
Step 1: Preparation
Remove any obstructions from the fireplace, such as grates or logs. Clean the insert with a brass cleaner and allow it to dry completely. Use 180-grit sandpaper to roughen the surface of the brass, then follow up with 320-grit sandpaper to smooth it out. Wipe away dust with a tack cloth.
Step 2: Taping and Priming (Optional)
If you want to protect surrounding areas, apply painter's tape to the edges of the insert. Priming the insert is recommended for better paint adhesion, especially if the brass is bare. Apply a thin coat of high-heat primer and let it dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 3: Spray Painting
Shake the can of spray paint thoroughly. Hold the can 6-8 inches from the insert and apply thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry for the recommended time. Apply multiple coats until the desired coverage is achieved.
Step 4: Finishing
Once the final coat is dry, remove the painter's tape (if used). Allow the paint to cure completely for several days before using the fireplace.
