A thermocouple is a safety device found in gas fireplaces that detects the presence of a flame. When the flame is present, the thermocouple heats up and generates a small electrical current. If the flame goes out, the thermocouple cools down, interrupting the electrical current, and shutting off the gas supply to prevent a dangerous gas buildup.

Over time, thermocouples can become corroded or damaged, leading to malfunctions. If your gas fireplace is not igniting, or if the flame keeps going out, the thermocouple may be the culprit.
