How to Reface a Fireplace

Updating your fireplace can transform the look and feel of your entire room. If your fireplace is looking a little dated or worn down, refacing it is a great way to give it a fresh, new look without having to replace the entire thing. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to reface a fireplace:

Materials you'll need:

  • Fireplace surround (can be made of stone, tile, brick, or other materials)
  • Thinset mortar
  • Grout
  • Masonry nails
  • Hammer or nail gun
  • Level
  • Caulk

Step 1: Remove the old surround

Start by removing the old fireplace surround. If it's made of tile, you can use a hammer and chisel to break it up and remove it. If it's made of stone or brick, you may need to use a pry bar or crowbar to loosen it and remove it.

Step 2: Clean the fireplace

Once the old surround is removed, take some time to clean the fireplace. Remove any soot or debris that may have accumulated, and sweep or vacuum the area.

Step 3: Install the new surround

Now it's time to install the new fireplace surround. Start by applying a thin layer of thinset mortar to the back of the surround. Place the surround in the desired location, and use a level to make sure it's even. Tap the surround into place with a hammer or mallet, and secure it with masonry nails.

Step 4: Grout the surround

Once the surround is in place, you need to grout the joints between the tiles or stones. Mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions, and apply it to the joints using a grout float. Wipe away any excess grout with a damp sponge.

Step 5: Caulk the surround

To finish the job, caulk the seams between the surround and the fireplace. This will help to seal out moisture and prevent any drafts from coming in.

Tips for refacing a fireplace:

  • If you're not comfortable working with stone or tile, you can hire a professional to reface your fireplace for you.
  • Before you start, make sure to read the manufacturer's instructions for the materials you're using.
  • Be patient and take your time. Refacing a fireplace can be a bit of a challenge, but it's a rewarding project that can make a big difference in the look of your home.
