How to Reface a Brick Fireplace: A Step-by-Step Guide

If your brick fireplace looks outdated or worn, a facelift can transform it into a stunning focal point. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you reface your brick fireplace and enhance the aesthetics of your home.

Materials and Tools

Gather the following materials:

  • Thin brick veneer
  • Mortar
  • Masonry adhesive
  • Grout
  • Caulk
  • Salt
  • Brick cleaner
  • Stiff-bristled brush
  • Mixing bucket
  • Trowel
  • Joint raker
  • Grout float
  • Caulk gun

Surface Preparation

Clean the brick to remove soot, dirt, and debris using a brick cleaner and stiff-bristled brush. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely. If necessary, fill any holes or cracks with masonry adhesive.

Installing the Thin Brick Veneer

Mix the mortar according to the manufacturer's instructions. Apply a thin layer of mortar to the back of the thin brick veneer and press it firmly onto the fireplace surface. Use a joint raker to space the bricks evenly.

Grouting

When the mortar has set, mix the grout. Apply it to the joints using a grout float, pressing it into the spaces. Remove excess grout with a damp sponge.

Caulking

To seal the edges of the veneer, apply a bead of heat-resistant caulk around the perimeter of the fireplace. This will prevent moisture penetration and enhance durability.

Salt Efflorescence Prevention

After installing the veneer, apply a solution of 1 part salt to 4 parts water. This will help prevent salt efflorescence, a white powdery substance that can appear on the bricks due to moisture evaporation.

Tips for Success

Here are some tips for a successful fireplace reface:

  • Use thin brick veneer instead of full-size bricks for ease of installation.
  • Choose a mortar mix specifically designed for brick veneer.
  • Work in small sections when installing the veneer to ensure accuracy.
  • Allow ample curing time for the mortar and grout before applying caulk.
  • Protect the reface from moisture during the curing process.
