How to Create an Outdoor Fireplace
An outdoor fireplace is a beautiful and functional addition to any home, extending your living space outdoors and providing warmth and ambiance on cool evenings. Building one may seem like a daunting task, but with careful planning and preparation, it is an achievable project for many homeowners.
Gather Materials
Before you begin, gather the necessary materials. These include:
- Firebrick
- Mortar
- Sand
- Gravel
- Cement
- Stone or bricks for the exterior
- Fireplace grate
- Capstone
Choose a Location
Carefully select the location for your fireplace. It should be in a well-ventilated area, away from trees and other flammable objects. Consider factors such as prevailing wind direction and proximity to seating areas.
Excavate the Site
Dig a pit for the fireplace, ensuring it is large enough to accommodate the firebox and exterior. The depth will depend on the height of the fireplace you desire.
Lay the Foundation
Create a 6-inch layer of gravel in the bottom of the pit and tamp it down. This will provide drainage and prevent water from accumulating. Mix cement according to the manufacturer's instructions and pour it over the gravel, smoothing it out to create a level surface.
Build the Firebox
Form the firebox using firebrick and mortar. Lay a layer of firebrick on the foundation and secure it with mortar. Continue building the walls and floor of the firebox, ensuring the joints are tight and staggered for strength.
Install the Fireplace Grate
Place the fireplace grate inside the firebox on top of the firebrick floor. The grate provides support for the wood and improves airflow.
Build the Exterior
Surround the firebox with the exterior stone or bricks, using mortar to secure them. Stagger the joints for added stability. As you build the walls, create an opening for the fireplace door and install a capstone on top.
Add Finishing Touches
Once the exterior is complete, add finishing touches such as a mantle, hearth, and seating area. Consider adding a screen or glass doors to prevent sparks from escaping.
Enjoy Your Outdoor Fireplace
Let the mortar cure completely before using your outdoor fireplace. Stoke the fire, gather friends and family, and enjoy the warmth and ambiance of your new outdoor oasis.
