How to Lay Brick for a Fireplace
Building a brick fireplace can be a rewarding and challenging project. By following these steps, you can create a beautiful and functional focal point for your home.
Materials You'll Need
- Bricks
- Mortar
- Masonry tools (trowel, level, string line)
- Fireplace grate
- Damper
- Firebox liner
Step 1: Prepare the Foundation
The foundation for your fireplace should be level and strong. If you are building a new fireplace, you will need to excavate a hole and pour a concrete pad. If you are adding a fireplace to an existing home, you may need to reinforce the floor.
Step 2: Lay the Base Course
The first course of bricks forms the base of the fireplace. Start by laying a string line along the front of the fireplace opening. This will help you keep the bricks straight. Apply a thin layer of mortar to the foundation and place the first brick on the string line. Use a level to ensure that the brick is level.
Step 3: Build the Firebox
The firebox is the chamber where the fire will burn. It is typically lined with firebricks to protect the surrounding bricks from heat. Start by laying a row of firebricks on the base course. Then, continue laying bricks around the perimeter of the firebox, overlapping the bricks slightly. Use a level to ensure that each course is level.
Step 4: Install the Fireplace Grate
The fireplace grate provides a platform for the burning wood. It is typically made of cast iron or steel. Place the grate on the bottom of the firebox.
Step 5: Install the Damper
The damper is used to control the airflow in the fireplace. It is typically installed in the throat of the fireplace, which is the point where the firebox meets the chimney. Insert the damper into the throat and secure it with screws.
Step 6: Install the Firebox Liner
The firebox liner helps to protect the firebox from heat and moisture. It is typically made of stainless steel or aluminum. Cut the liner to fit the firebox and insert it. Secure the liner with mortar.
Step 7: Complete the Fireplace
Once the firebox is complete, you can finish the fireplace by laying the remaining bricks. Continue laying bricks until you reach the desired height. Use a level to ensure that each course is level.
Step 8: Cure the Mortar
Allow the mortar to cure for at least 24 hours before using the fireplace. This will give the mortar time to harden and become strong.
