How to Build an Outdoor Gas Fireplace

A gravel or rock base for the fireplace

Once you have gathered your materials, you can begin building your fireplace. Start by clearing the area where you want to build the fireplace and digging a hole for the gravel or rock base. The base should be at least 6 inches deep and wide enough to accommodate the fireplace insert. Fill the hole with gravel or rock and tamp it down firmly.

Next, build a frame for the fireplace using fire-resistant cement board. The frame should be slightly smaller than the fireplace insert. Cut the cement board to size and assemble it with thin-set mortar. Let the mortar dry completely.

Once the surround is complete, you can connect the gas line to the fireplace insert. Be sure to use a licensed plumber to make this connection. Once the gas line is connected, you can test the fireplace by turning on the gas and lighting the pilot light.
