How to Build an Outdoor Fireplace Grill

Building an outdoor fireplace grill can be a rewarding and enjoyable project that adds functionality and ambiance to your outdoor space. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to build your own:

Materials and Tools

  • Fireplace bricks
  • Mortar
  • Gravel
  • Metal grilling grate
  • Chimney cap
  • Level
  • Trowel
  • Hammer
  • Chisel

Step 1: Prepare the Base

Excavate an area approximately 3 feet wide and 2 feet deep. Fill the hole with gravel and compact it firmly to create a stable base for the fireplace.

Step 2: Lay the Foundation

Start by laying a course of fireplace bricks in a rectangular or square shape. Use a level to ensure the bricks are level and flush with each other. Mortar the bricks together to secure them.

Step 3: Build the Firebox

Continue laying courses of bricks to form the walls of the firebox, which will be the area where the fire burns. The height of the firebox can vary depending on your preference, but generally 24-30 inches is recommended.

Step 4: Install the Grilling Grate

Once the firebox is complete, place the metal grilling grate inside. The grate should rest on the walls of the firebox approximately 6-8 inches above the bottom.

Step 5: Build the Chimney

Lay courses of bricks to form the chimney. The chimney should be approximately 4-6 inches wide and at least 2 feet tall to provide proper ventilation. Use a chisel and hammer to cut bricks to fit around the fireplace opening.

Step 6: Top Off the Chimney

Install a chimney cap on top of the chimney. This will prevent rain and debris from entering the fireplace and help the smoke escape effectively.

Step 7: Allow to Cure

Allow the mortar to cure for several days before using the fireplace. Do not build a fire in the fireplace until the mortar has fully hardened.

Tips for Building an Outdoor Fireplace Grill

  • Use fireplace bricks specifically designed for outdoor use, as they are more resistant to heat and moisture.
  • Use a high-quality mortar that is specifically formulated for masonry work.
  • Protect the fireplace from rain and moisture when not in use by covering it with a tarp or fireplace cover.
  • Inspect the fireplace regularly for any cracks or damage and repair as needed.
  • Always build a fire in the fireplace responsibly and follow all safety precautions.
