How to Build an Electric Fireplace Mantel

Electric fireplaces have become increasingly popular in recent years as a safe, efficient, and affordable way to add warmth and ambiance to any room. While there are many different types of electric fireplaces available, one of the most popular is the mantel-mounted model. Mantel-mounted electric fireplaces are designed to be installed on a wall, just like a traditional wood-burning fireplace, and they come in a variety of styles to match any décor.

If you're thinking about adding an electric fireplace to your home, building your own mantel is a great way to save money and customize the look of your fireplace. Here are the steps on how to build an electric fireplace mantel:

Materials you will need

  • 1x12 pine boards
  • 2x4 pine boards
  • 1/2-inch plywood
  • Wood glue1 1/4-inch brad nails
  • 2-inch wood screws
  • CaulkPaint or stain

Tools you will need

  • Circular saw
  • Miter saw
  • Drill
  • Brad nailer
  • Clamps
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

Step 1: Cut the pieces

The first step is to cut the pieces for your mantel. You will need two 1x12 pine boards for the top and bottom of the mantel, and two 2x4 pine boards for the sides. The length of the mantel will depend on the size of your fireplace, but it is typically around 60 inches long.

Once you have cut the pieces to length, you will need to cut the miters on the ends of the top and bottom boards. To do this, set your miter saw to a 45-degree angle and cut the ends of the boards at a 45-degree angle. This will create a mitered corner when the boards are assembled.

Step 2: Assemble the mantel

Once you have cut the pieces, you can assemble the mantel. Start by applying wood glue to the mitered edges of the top and bottom boards. Then, clamp the boards together and secure them with 1 1/4-inch brad nails. Next, attach the 2x4 side boards to the top and bottom boards using 2-inch wood screws.

Step 3: Attach the plywood backing

Once the mantel is assembled, you need to attach the plywood backing. This will help to strengthen the mantel and provide a surface for mounting the electric fireplace.

To attach the plywood backing, apply wood glue to the back of the mantel and then clamp the plywood in place. Secure the plywood with 1 1/4-inch brad nails.

Step 4: Caulk and paint or stain

Once the plywood backing is attached, you can caulk the seams between the plywood and the mantel. This will help to seal the mantel and prevent drafts.

Once the caulk has dried, you can paint or stain the mantel to match your décor. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before mounting the electric fireplace.

Step 5: Mount the electric fireplace

The final step is to mount the electric fireplace to the mantel. Most electric fireplaces come with mounting hardware, so follow the manufacturer's instructions for mounting the fireplace.

Once the electric fireplace is mounted, you can enjoy the warmth and ambiance of your new fireplace.
