How to Build a Wood Fireplace Surround
A fireplace surround is the decorative framing that surrounds a fireplace opening. It can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, stone, and tile. Wood is a popular choice because it is relatively inexpensive and easy to work with. It can also be stained or painted to match any décor.
Building a wood fireplace surround is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a weekend. The first step is to measure the fireplace opening. The surround should be at least 2 inches wider and taller than the opening. The next step is to purchase the necessary materials.
Materials needed:
- 1x6 pine boards
- 1x4 pine boards
- 2x4 pine boards
- Wood glue
- 1 1/4-inch brad nails
- 2-inch wood screws
- Sandpaper
- Stain or paint (optional)
Once you have gathered the necessary materials, you can begin building the surround. The first step is to build the frame. Cut the 2x4 pine boards to the desired height and width of the surround. Assemble the frame using wood glue and 2-inch wood screws.
Once the frame is assembled, you can begin attaching the 1x6 pine boards. Cut the boards to the desired length and attach them to the frame using wood glue and 1 1/4-inch brad nails. Be sure to leave a small gap between the boards for expansion.
Once the 1x6 boards are attached, you can begin attaching the 1x4 pine boards. Cut the boards to the desired length and attach them to the frame using wood glue and 1 1/4-inch brad nails.
Once the surround is assembled, you can sand it smooth and stain or paint it to match your décor. Allow the stain or paint to dry completely before using the fireplace.
Additional Tips
- If you are not comfortable using power tools, you can have the materials cut to size at your local hardware store.
- Be sure to use a level to make sure that the surround is level before attaching it to the fireplace.
- If you are using a gas fireplace, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the surround.
