How to Build a Floating Fireplace Mantel with Crown Molding

Materials You'll Need:

1x8 pine boards for mantel shelf
1x2 pine boards for supports
Crown molding
Wood glue
1-1/4" wood screws
2-inch wood screws
Level

Step 1: Build the Mantel Shelf

Cut two 1x8 pine boards to the desired length of your mantel shelf. Align the boards side by side and glue them together. Clamp the boards firmly and let the glue dry completely.

Step 2: Attach Supports

Cut two 1x2 pine boards to the same length as the mantel shelf. Position them perpendicular to the shelf, one at each end, and secure them with 1-1/4" wood screws. Make sure the supports are flush with the bottom edge of the shelf.

Step 3: Install Cleats

Determine the height at which you want to mount the mantel. Cut two additional 1x2 pine boards to that height. These cleats will support the mantel on the wall. Attach them to the wall using 2-inch wood screws.

Step 4: Mount the Mantel

Place the assembled mantel shelf on top of the cleats. Use a level to ensure it is level and centered over the fireplace. Secure the mantel to the cleats using 1-1/4" wood screws.

Step 5: Add Crown Molding

Cut the crown molding to the length of the mantel shelf. Apply wood glue to the top of the shelf and press the crown molding in place. Secure it with small nails or a nail gun for a seamless finish.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

Fill any nail or screw holes with wood filler. Sand the entire mantel to smooth out any rough edges. Stain or paint the mantel to match your existing decor.
