How to Build a Fireplace Surround Over Stone
Building a fireplace surround over stone is an excellent way to update the look of your fireplace and add a touch of elegance to your home. While it may seem like a daunting task, it is actually a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours.
Materials:
- Fireplace surround kit
- Stone veneer
- Mortar
- Grout
- Masonry nails
- Caulk
Tools:
- Hammer
- Level
- Notched trowel
- Grout float
- Caulk gun
Instructions:
- Prepare the stone veneer. If the stone veneer is not already cut to size, you will need to cut it using a wet saw. Make sure to wear safety glasses and gloves when cutting the stone.
- Apply mortar to the fireplace surround. Using a notched trowel, apply a thin layer of mortar to the back of the fireplace surround. Be sure to apply the mortar evenly and avoid getting any on the front of the surround.
- Set the stone veneer on the fireplace surround. Carefully set the stone veneer on the fireplace surround, pressing it into the mortar. Use a level to make sure that the stone veneer is level.
- Grout the stone veneer. Once the mortar has set, you can grout the stone veneer. Using a grout float, apply a thin layer of grout to the joints between the stones. Be sure to wipe off any excess grout with a damp sponge.
- Caulk the fireplace surround. Once the grout has set, you can caulk the fireplace surround. Apply a thin bead of caulk around the edges of the surround, where it meets the stone veneer and the fireplace.
Building a fireplace surround over stone is a relatively simple project that can add a touch of elegance to your home. By following these instructions, you can easily create a beautiful and functional fireplace surround that will last for years to come.
