• Thin-set mortar

Step 1: Preparation

First, prepare the area around your fireplace. Clear away any furniture or obstacles. Protect the floor and walls around the fireplace with plastic or drop cloths.

Step 2: Install Backer Board

Install a cement backer board onto the wall behind the fireplace. Cut it to size and secure it with screws or nails. The backer board provides a stable surface for the tile.

Step 3: Dry Fit the Tiles

Lay out the tiles on the backer board without using mortar. This "dry fit" step allows you to check their alignment and make adjustments as needed.

Step 4: Apply Thin-Set Mortar

Spread thin-set mortar onto the backer board with a notched trowel. Press the tiles into the mortar, pushing them down evenly. Leave small spaces between the tiles for grout.

Step 5: Insert Tile Spacers

Insert tile spacers between the tiles to ensure consistent gaps. Spacers help prevent the tiles from shifting while the mortar dries.

Step 6: Grout the Tiles

Once the mortar has cured, apply grout to the spaces between the tiles. Use a grout float to spread the grout evenly and remove excess.

Step 7: Clean the Tiles

After the grout has set, clean the tiles with a damp sponge. Remove any grout residue or haze that may have formed.

Step 8: Seal the Tiles

Apply a sealer to the tiles to protect them from moisture and stains. Allow the sealer to dry as per the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 9: Caulk the Edges

Use a caulking gun and caulk to seal the edges of the surround where it meets the wall or mantle. This will prevent moisture from seeping in.
