How to Build a Double-Sided Outdoor Fireplace

Double-sided fireplaces offer ample warmth and ambiance in your outdoor living space. Whether for relaxing on a cool evening or entertaining friends and family, they serve as a stunning focal point. Building one may seem intimidating, but with precise planning and execution, you can achieve this stunning addition to your backyard oasis.

Materials Required:

  • Fire-resistant bricks or stones
  • Fireplace mortar
  • Concrete blocks for footings
  • Rebar
  • Fireplace grate and damper
  • Chimney pipe and cap
  • Masonry saw
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Masonry nails

Step 1: Plan and Design

Determine the desired size and shape of your fireplace. Ensure it aligns with the existing architecture and outdoor furniture arrangement. Plan a solid foundation for stability by marking the location and excavating for the footings.

Step 2: Lay the Foundation

Pour a concrete footing for support. Allow it to cure completely before laying a row of concrete blocks. These blocks will serve as the base for the fireplace.

Step 3: Build the Walls

Begin laying the bricks or stones, alternating between rows of headers and stretchers for strength. Use fireplace mortar for bonding and align the bricks using a level. Ensure the walls are square and level as you progress.

Step 4: Create the Fireplace Opening

Leave an opening at the center of the fireplace to accommodate the fireplace grate. Support the opening with a heavy-duty lintel or arch bricks to prevent sagging.

Step 5: Install the Firebox

Place the fireplace grate inside the opening. Attach a damper above the grate to control airflow and prevent sparks from escaping. The damper should extend through the chimney pipe.

Step 6: Construct the Chimney

Assemble the chimney pipe and cap. Secure the pipe to the top of the fireplace with masonry nails. The cap will prevent rain and debris from entering the chimney.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

Allow the fireplace to cure completely before the first use. Create a hearth by extending the flooring materials in front of the fireplace for added safety and aesthetics.

Building a double-sided outdoor fireplace requires precision and attention to detail. However, the end result is a beautiful and functional addition that will enhance your outdoor living space for years to come.
