DIY Stone Fireplace Surround: A Step-by-Step Guide

Natural stone tiles (travertine, slate, limestone, etc.)
Thinset mortar

Step 1: Prep the Fireplace Opening

Begin by cleaning the fireplace opening thoroughly. Remove any existing tiles or trim. Ensure the surface is flat and level. If necessary, use a level to create a temporary guide line.

Step 2: Install the Backer Board

Apply a layer of thinset mortar to the fireplace opening. Place a backer board (cement board or HardieBacker) over the mortar. Secure it with screws. Allow the mortar to set.

Step 4: Cut the Stone Tiles

Use a masonry saw or a chisel and hammer to cut the tiles to fit around the fireplace opening. If needed, smooth the cut edges with a grinding stone.

Step 5: Install the Stone Tiles

Apply a thin layer of thinset mortar to the back of each tile. Place the tiles onto the backer board and press firmly to ensure adhesion. Use tile spacers to maintain even gaps.

Step 6: Grout the Tiles

Once the thinset has dried, apply grout to the gaps between the tiles. Use a grout float to press the grout into the seams. Remove any excess grout.

Step 7: Clean and Seal

Wipe down the surround with a damp sponge to remove any grout residue. Once the grout is completely dry, apply a stone sealer to protect the tiles from moisture and stains.
