DIY: How to Build a Frame for an Electric Fireplace Insert

Electric fireplace inserts have become increasingly popular due to their high energy efficiency, ease of installation, and ability to enhance the ambiance of any room. However, these inserts require proper framing to ensure they are well-supported, protected, and aesthetically incorporated into your space.

Materials Required

1x8 pine boards
1x4 pine boards
MDF board (optional, for the hearth)
Wood screws
Miter saw

Step 1: Assemble the Sides

Cut two 1x8 pine boards to the desired height of your frame. These boards will form the sides of the frame. Mitre cut the top edges of these boards to create a 45-degree angle joint where they meet at the top.

Step 2: Install Shelf Supports

Determine the height at which you want the shelf support to be positioned. Cut two 1x4 pine boards to this length. Attach these support boards to the inside of the side boards using wood screws. The support boards should be perpendicular to the side boards.

Step 3: Build the Back

Cut a 1x8 pine board to the width of the frame. This board will form the back of the frame. Secure the back board to the side boards and shelf supports using wood screws.

Step 4: Create the Hearth (Optional)

If desired, you can add a hearth. Cut an MDF board to the desired size and shape of the hearth. Place the hearth on top of the frame and secure it with wood screws from below.

Step 5: Assemble the Top

Cut two 1x8 pine boards to the width of the frame. Mitre cut the ends of these boards to create a 45-degree angle joint where they meet at the top. Attach the top boards to the side boards and back board using wood screws.

Step 6: Install the Electric Fireplace Insert

Place the electric fireplace insert inside the frame. Ensure it is level and centered before securing it in place according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

If desired, you can paint or stain the frame to match your décor. Add any additional decorative elements, such as trim or molding, to enhance the appearance of the frame.

Use a level to ensure all pieces are square and straight.
Pre-drill holes before inserting screws to prevent splitting the wood.
