Cover Brick Fireplace With Drywall

Tired of the rustic appeal of your brick fireplace? Covering it with drywall can instantly modernize your living space. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you tackle this project with ease:

1. Prepare the Fireplace

Remove any accessories, grates, or logs from the fireplace. Clean the brick surface thoroughly using a wire brush or scraper. Remove mortar or debris that may interfere with adhesion.

2. Install Furring Strips

Furring strips provide a flat base for drywall. Attach them vertically to the brick using screws or construction adhesive. Space them evenly, typically around 12-16 inches apart.

3. Attach Backer Board

Backer board is a moisture-resistant underlayment that provides a smooth surface for drywall. Cut it to fit the fireplace opening and secure it to the furring strips using screws.

4. Prime the Board

Apply a primer specifically designed for backer board. This will enhance adhesion and prevent moisture damage.

5. Measure and Cut Drywall

Measure and cut pieces of drywall to cover the fireplace opening. Use a sharp utility knife and a straight edge for precise cuts.

6. Attach Drywall

Spread a thin layer of drywall adhesive or compound on the back of the drywall panels. Position them over the backer board and secure them using screws or nails. Countersink the fasteners slightly below the surface.

7. Joint Treatment

Cover the joints between the drywall panels with drywall tape. Apply joint compound and smooth it out using a putty knife. Once the first coat has dried, apply a second coat and sand it smooth.

8. Paint or Finish

Once the drywall is installed and smooth, you can paint or apply a decorative finish to match the surrounding décor. Choose a latex paint designed for interior walls and apply it according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Tips:

  • Use galvanized screws or nails to prevent rust.
  • Caulk around the edges of the drywall to seal any gaps.
  • Protect your eyes and wear a dust mask while working.
  • If the fireplace is still in use, leave a small opening for ventilation.
