Build a Fireplace Mantel Surround Over Brick

Transform your fireplace into a stunning focal point with a custom mantel surround. Building a surround over brick requires careful planning and precision, but with the right materials and techniques, you can create a beautiful and functional addition to your home.

Step 1: Gather Materials

  • Fireplace mantel (wood or stone)
  • Furring strips (1x4 or 2x4)
  • Plywood (1/2-inch or thicker)
  • Construction adhesive
  • Nails or screws
  • Caulk
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Step 2: Prepare the Brick Surface

Remove any dirt or debris from the brick surface. If the brick is uneven or damaged, use a grinder or chisel to smooth it out. Allow the brick to dry completely before proceeding.

Step 3: Install Furring Strips

Determine the desired height and depth of the mantel surround. Cut furring strips to size and attach them vertically to the brick using construction adhesive and nails or screws. Space the furring strips evenly apart, approximately 16 inches on center.

Step 4: Attach Plywood

Cut a piece of plywood to the desired size and shape of the mantel surround. Apply construction adhesive to the furring strips and press the plywood into place. Nail or screw the plywood securely to the furring strips.

Step 5: Install Mantel

Center the mantel on the plywood and attach it using construction adhesive and nails or screws. Ensure the mantel is level and flush with the front edge of the plywood.

Step 6: Trim and Caulk

Cut any excess furring strips or plywood that protrudes beyond the mantel. Apply caulk to the joints between the mantel, plywood, and brick to seal any gaps and prevent moisture penetration.

Step 7: Finish

If desired, paint or stain the mantel surround to match your desired aesthetic. Allow the finish to dry completely before using the fireplace.

Tips:

  • Use a level to ensure all surfaces are even.
  • Allow ample time for the construction adhesive to dry before attaching any components.
  • Consider using a heat-resistant material for the mantel if it will be exposed to high temperatures.
  • If you are unsure about any aspect of the installation, consult with a professional contractor.
