Build a Fireplace Mantel Over Brick: A Comprehensive Guide

Transforming your brick fireplace with a stunning mantel is an excellent way to enhance its aesthetics and functionality. With careful planning and the right materials, you can create a bespoke mantel that complements your home's décor.

Step 1: Measure and Plan

Begin by measuring the width and height of the fireplace opening. Determine the desired mantel length and height, ensuring it extends at least 6 inches beyond the fireplace opening on each side for support. Mark the studs on the wall above the fireplace to identify the location for mounting the mantel.

Step 2: Create the Mantel Shelf

Cut the mantel board to the desired length. Use a jigsaw or circular saw to create any decorative cuts or angles. Sand the edges smooth and apply a wood stain or paint.

Step 3: Build the Mantel Base

For the mantel base, use 1x10 or 1x12 pine boards cut to the width of the fireplace opening. Assemble the base by gluing and nailing the boards together in a box-like shape.

Step 4: Attach the Mantel Shelf

Place the mantel base on the mantel shelf and align it with the studs on the wall. Secure the base to the studs with 3-inch screws. Then, flip the mantel assembly upside down and glue the mantel shelf to the base.

Step 5: Install the Mantel Assembly

Lift the mantel assembly into place over the fireplace opening. Use a level to ensure it is plumb and level. Drive 3-inch screws through the base into the studs on the wall to secure it.
