Removing a Gas Fireplace Insert

Removing a gas fireplace insert can be a simple task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can safely detach an insert and prepare your fireplace for a new one or other use.

Safety First: Turn Off Gas and Electricity

Before disconnecting anything, turn off the gas supply to the fireplace. This is usually done by closing a valve located near the base of the fireplace. Next, turn off the electricity to the fireplace by flipping the circuit breaker or removing the fuse that powers it.

Detach Gas Line

Using a wrench, carefully loosen the flare nut that connects the gas line to the insert. Be sure to keep a rag handy to catch any water that may leak out. Once the flare nut is loose, disconnect the gas line from the insert.

Remove Electrical Wiring

Locate the electrical wires that are connected to the insert. Carefully detach these wires using a screwdriver. Make sure to label the wires so that you can reconnect them correctly when you install a new insert.

Remove Screws and Bolts

Using a screwdriver or wrench, remove all of the screws or bolts that are holding the insert in place. Some inserts may be secured with hidden screws, so be sure to check all around the insert before attempting to lift it out.

Lift Out Insert

Once all of the screws and bolts have been removed, carefully lift the insert out of the fireplace. Be careful not to damage the fireplace or the insert. If the insert is particularly heavy, you may need to use a pry bar to help lift it out.

Clean Up

Once the insert is removed, clean up any remaining gas or water. You may also want to clean the inside of the fireplace to remove any soot or debris. If you are not installing a new insert, you can seal the fireplace opening with a metal plate or a piece of drywall.
