DIY Small Outdoor Fireplace: A Comprehensive Guide
Creating your own small outdoor fireplace is a fantastic way to enhance your backyard and create a cozy ambiance. This project is surprisingly accessible and cost-effective, even for beginners. Follow this comprehensive guide to build a durable and functional outdoor fireplace that will provide warmth and enjoyment for years to come.
Materials and Tools
* Fire-resistant bricks * Mortar mix * Sand * Gravel * Fire pit grate * Shovel * Bucket * Trowel * Level * Measuring tape * Safety gear (gloves, goggles)Site Preparation
Choose a level and well-drained area for your fireplace. Dig a circular hole about 2 feet wide and 1 foot deep. Line the bottom of the hole with 2-3 inches of gravel for drainage.
Foundation
Mix mortar according to the manufacturer's instructions. Spread a layer of mortar on the gravel base and place a layer of bricks in a circular pattern. Use a level to ensure the bricks are level. Allow the foundation to cure for 24 hours.
Firebox
Lay the second layer of bricks to form the firebox. Alternate the direction of the bricks in each layer to create a stable structure. Build the walls to a height of about 2 feet, leaving an opening for the fire pit grate.
Fire Pit Grate
Place the fire pit grate on top of the firebox walls. This will support the fuel and allow air to circulate for optimal burning.
Chimney
Create a hollow space in the center of the fireplace by laying the bricks with gaps between them. This will form the chimney, which allows smoke to escape.
Finishing Touches
Fill the gaps between the bricks with mortar. Smooth the mortar with a trowel to create a finished surface. Allow the fireplace to cure for at least 7 days before using it. Apply a heat-resistant sealer to protect the fireplace from the elements.
Fire Safety Precautions
* Use seasoned firewood only, as green wood can produce excessive smoke. * Never leave a fire unattended. * Keep flammable materials, such as furniture or curtains, away from the fireplace. * Have a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies. * Check local regulations regarding fire safety before using your outdoor fireplace.22 Cozy Diy Outdoor Fireplaces Fire Pit And Fireplace Ideas
