How to Build a Brick Outdoor Fireplace: A Comprehensive Guide

An outdoor fireplace can be a stunning addition to any backyard, providing warmth and ambiance on chilly evenings. While building a brick outdoor fireplace may seem like a daunting task, it is achievable with careful planning and execution. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the essential aspects of constructing a brick outdoor fireplace, from selecting the right materials to finishing touches.

Materials and Tools

To begin, gather the necessary materials and tools. For the fireplace itself, you will need bricks, mortar, flue tiles, a firebox, and a damper. Additional materials may include gravel, sand, concrete blocks, and a hearth. Essential tools include a trowel, level, hammer, chisel, and measuring tape.

Layout and Foundation

Start by determining the desired location of the fireplace. Mark the outline of the base and dig a trench approximately 12 inches deep and wide enough to accommodate the concrete blocks. Fill the trench with gravel and compact it, then lay the concrete blocks to form a level foundation.

Building the Base

Using mortar, lay the first layer of bricks on the foundation, creating a square or rectangular base. Continue adding layers until the base reaches the desired height, typically around two or three feet. Be sure to level each layer carefully and check the corners for squareness.

Firebox and Flue

Insert the firebox into the center of the base and connect the flue tiles to the top of the firebox. The flue will allow smoke and heat to escape. Mortar the firebox and flue into place, ensuring a tight seal to prevent leaks.

Damper and Hearth

Install a damper at the top of the flue, which will regulate the airflow and prevent drafts. Construct a square hearth in front of the fireplace using concrete blocks or pavers, extending approximately 24 inches from the opening. The hearth provides a fire-safe surface.

Facing and Finishing

Apply a thin layer of mortar to the outer surface of the fireplace and begin facing the bricks. Carefully place each brick, alternating the placement to create a strong bond. Once the facing is complete, smooth the mortar joints. Apply a sealant to the fireplace to protect it from the elements.
