How to Remove Soot From a Stone Fireplace

Soot buildup is an inevitable part of owning a wood-burning fireplace. While it may not be aesthetically pleasing, soot accumulation can also pose health risks, especially if it's inhaled. Fortunately, there are several effective methods for removing soot from stone fireplaces.

Materials You'll Need:

Soft-bristled brush
Vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment
Clean cloths or sponges
Baking soda
White vinegar
Ammonia (optional)

Step 1: Safety First

Before you begin cleaning, make sure the fireplace is completely cool and all embers are extinguished. Wear a dust mask or respirator to prevent inhaling soot particles.

Step 2: Brush and Vacuum

Use a soft-bristled brush to gently remove loose soot from the stone surface. Pay attention to crevices and corners where soot tends to accumulate. Vacuum the soot with a soft brush attachment to ensure thorough removal.

Step 3: Baking Soda Paste

Create a paste by mixing baking soda with enough water to form a thick consistency. Apply the paste to the soot-covered areas and let it sit for 15-30 minutes. The baking soda will absorb the soot and neutralize any odors.

Step 4: Wipe Down with Vinegar
