How to Install Ledgestone Over a Brick Fireplace

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Clean the brick fireplace thoroughly to remove dust, dirt, and any previous finishes. Use a wire brush to remove loose mortar or debris from the surface. Ensure it is level and free of any imperfections or cracks.

Step 2: Mix the Mortar

Mix the mortar according to the manufacturer's instructions. It should be slightly thick and workable, not too wet or dry.

Step 3: Dry-Fit the Ledgestone

Arrange the ledgestone veneers on the fireplace surface without using mortar. This allows you to visualize the desired layout and make adjustments as needed. Use spacers to maintain consistent joint lines.

Step 4: Apply the Mortar

Spread a thin layer of mortar onto the back of each ledgestone using a trowel. Notch the edges of the mortar to enhance bond strength.

Step 5: Install the Ledgestone

Carefully place the ledgestone on the fireplace surface, pressing it firmly into the mortar. Use a level to ensure each stone is straight and aligned with the previous ones. Slide joint spacers into place.
