How to Reface a Brick Fireplace with Stacked Stone

Stacked stone veneer is a popular choice for updating the look of a brick fireplace. It's relatively easy to install and can give your fireplace a more modern or rustic appearance. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to reface a brick fireplace with stacked stone:

Materials You'll Need:

  • Stacked stone veneer
  • Mortar mix
  • Grout
  • Grout float
  • Trowel
  • Level
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

Step 1: Prepare the Fireplace

Start by removing any existing trim or molding around the fireplace opening. Clean the brick surface thoroughly with a wire brush or power washer to remove any dirt or debris. If there are any cracks or holes in the brick, repair them with mortar mix.

Step 2: Dry-Fit the Stone

Lay out the stacked stone veneer pieces on the fireplace without applying any mortar. This will help you visualize how the finished product will look and make any necessary adjustments to the layout.

Step 3: Apply Mortar

Using a trowel, apply a thin layer of mortar mix to the back of each stone piece. Be sure to spread the mortar evenly and avoid getting it on the edges or faces of the stone.

Step 4: Install the Stone

Press the stone piece into place on the fireplace. Use a level to ensure that it is level. Tap lightly on the stone with a rubber mallet to secure it. Continue installing the stone pieces in this manner, working from the bottom up.

Step 5: Grout the Stone

Once the stacked stone veneer is installed, allow the mortar to cure for at least 24 hours. Then, mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. Using a grout float, apply the grout to the joints between the stone pieces. Be sure to press the grout firmly into the joints and remove any excess.

Step 6: Seal the Stone

Once the grout has cured, apply a sealer to the stacked stone veneer. This will help protect the stone from moisture and staining. Allow the sealer to dry completely before enjoying your newly refaced fireplace.
