How to Redo Tile Around a Fireplace

Retiling around a fireplace can give your home a fresh, updated look. It's a project that can be completed in a weekend with a little planning and preparation. Here are the steps on how to redo tile around a fireplace:

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Start by removing the old tile. Use a hammer and chisel or a pry bar to carefully remove the tiles. Be sure to wear safety glasses and gloves when working with sharp tools. Once the old tile is removed, clean the surface thoroughly with a damp cloth. Let the surface dry completely before proceeding.

Step 2: Install Backer Board

Backer board is a thin, waterproof material that provides a stable surface for the tile. Cut the backer board to fit the area around the fireplace. Use a backer board adhesive or screws to secure the backer board to the surface.

Step 3: Apply Thin-set Mortar

Thin-set mortar is a type of adhesive that is used to install tile. Apply a thin layer of thin-set mortar to the back of each tile. Use a notched trowel to create ridges in the mortar. This will help to ensure that the tile adheres properly.

Step 4: Set the Tile

Starting from the bottom corner of the fireplace, set the first tile in place. Press the tile firmly into the thin-set mortar. Use a level to make sure that the tile is level. Continue setting the tiles, working your way up and around the fireplace.

Step 5: Grout the Tile

Once the tile is set, it's time to grout the joints. Grout is a type of cement that is used to fill the spaces between the tiles. Mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. Apply the grout to the joints using a grout float. Use a damp sponge to remove any excess grout.

Step 6: Seal the Grout

Once the grout has dried, it's important to seal it. This will protect the grout from moisture and stains. Apply a grout sealer to the joints. Let the sealer dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 7: Enjoy Your New Tile

Now that your tile is installed and sealed, you can enjoy your new fireplace surround. The new tile will give your fireplace a fresh, updated look.
