Making an Outdoor Fireplace with Brick: A Comprehensive Guide

Creating an outdoor fireplace with brick is a rewarding project that adds value and ambiance to any backyard. While it requires some planning and effort, the end result is a stunning and functional feature that will be enjoyed for years to come.

Essential Materials

Before embarking on this project, gather the following essential materials:
  • Fire bricks
  • Standard bricks
  • Mortar mix
  • Gravel
  • Pavers or flagstones
  • Fireplace grate

Choosing a Location

Select a location that is safe and meets local building codes. It should be far from trees, shrubs, and other flammable materials. Consider the prevailing wind direction to avoid having smoke blown back into the seating area.

Preparing the Foundation

Dig a hole for the foundation that is at least 12 inches deep and 12 inches wider than the intended fireplace size. Fill the hole with gravel and pack it down firmly. Place a layer of pavers or flagstones over the gravel to create a level and stable base.

Building the Walls

Start by laying a course of fire bricks along the perimeter of the base. These fire bricks will withstand the intense heat of the fire. Build up the walls by alternating courses of fire bricks with courses of standard bricks. Use mortar mix to hold the bricks together, pressing it firmly into the joints.

Creating the Hearth

The hearth is the area in front of the fireplace where the fire burns. Line the hearth with fire bricks, placing them on a slight slope towards the front to improve drainage. Use a trowel to smooth the mortar joints.

Installing the Grate

The fireplace grate is an essential component that provides a raised surface for the firewood and allows air to circulate beneath it. Place the grate on top of the hearth bricks and secure it with mortar.

Finishing Touches

Once the mortar has set, apply a sealant to protect the bricks from the elements. You can also add decorative touches such as a mantlepiece or a chimney.

Enjoying the Outdoor Fireplace

After the fireplace has been completed, allow it to cure for at least a week before using it. Build a small fire and gradually increase the size over several days to prevent the bricks from cracking due to rapid temperature changes.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential to keep the outdoor fireplace in good condition. Clean the grate and remove ashes regularly. Inspect the mortar joints and repair any cracks as needed. Re-seal the bricks every few years to protect them from the elements. By following these steps, you can successfully create a beautiful and functional outdoor fireplace with brick that will provide years of enjoyment and warmth.
