How to Update a Tile Fireplace Surround

Updating a tile fireplace surround can dramatically enhance the appearance of your living room or den. Follow these steps to transform your fireplace into a beautiful focal point.

Materials You'll Need:

  • New tiles (quantity and size depend on your fireplace)
  • Tile adhesive
  • Grout
  • Grout float
  • Tile spacers (optional)
  • Trowel
  • Caulk gun and caulk
  • Pry bar or flathead screwdriver
  • Safety glasses
  • Dust mask

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Remove the Old Tiles

Wear safety glasses and a dust mask. Use a pry bar or flathead screwdriver to carefully lift the old tiles from the surround. Work slowly to avoid damaging the fireplace surround. Clean the surface thoroughly to remove any remaining adhesive or grout.

2. Prepare the Surround

If the surround is uneven or damaged, use a patching compound to repair any holes or cracks. Allow the patch to dry completely.

3. Apply Tile Adhesive

Using a notched trowel, apply a thin layer of tile adhesive to the fireplace surround. Hold the trowel at a 45-degree angle and make sure to cover the entire surface.

4. Install the New Tiles

Start laying the new tiles in the center of the surround and work your way outwards. Press each tile firmly into the adhesive. Use tile spacers to ensure even spacing between the tiles.

5. Grout the Tiles

Once the adhesive has dried, mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. Using a grout float, apply the grout to the spaces between the tiles. Fill all the joints completely.

6. Clean the Grout

After the grout has set for 15-20 minutes, use a damp sponge to clean off any excess grout. Rinse the sponge frequently in clean water.

7. Caulk the Edges

To seal the edges of the fireplace surround, apply a bead of caulk along the joints between the tiles and the fireplace surround. Smooth the caulk with your finger or a caulk tool.

8. Let Dry

Allow the caulk to dry completely before using the fireplace.

Tips for a Professional Finish:

  • Use a level to ensure that the tiles are straight.
  • Take your time and don't rush the process.
  • Clean up any excess adhesive or grout immediately.
  • Consider using a contrasting grout color to highlight the tiles.
  • Seal the grout with a grout sealer to protect it from moisture and stains.
