How to Tile Over a Slate Fireplace Surround: A Step-by-Step Guide

Transforming a slate fireplace surround with tiles is a project that can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your living space. Whether you're replacing outdated tiles or simply changing the look of your fireplace, tiling over slate is a manageable task with the right preparation and tools. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you achieve a professional-looking tiled fireplace surround over slate:

1. Prepare the Slate Surface

Thoroughly clean the slate surface with a degreaser to remove any dust, dirt, or grease. Use a wire brush to remove any loose slate or debris. Repair any cracks or chips in the slate using an epoxy patch kit designed for slate.

2. Apply a Bonding Primer

Apply a bonding primer specifically designed for slate surfaces. This will create a strong bond between the slate and the tiles, preventing them from peeling or falling off.

3. Install Cement Backer Board (Optional)

While not always necessary, installing a cement backer board over the slate provides a more stable and flat surface for the tiles. Use thinset mortar to secure the backer board to the slate, ensuring it is level and flush with the existing surround.

4. Mix Thinset Mortar

Mix thinset mortar according to the manufacturer's instructions. This adhesive will bond the tiles to the slate or cement backer board. Use a notched trowel to spread the mortar evenly over the surface.

5. Lay the Tiles

Starting from the bottom row, carefully lay the tiles onto the mortar, pressing them firmly into place. Use tile spacers to ensure even spacing between the tiles.

6. Grout the Tiles

Once the tiles are set, mix and apply grout to the spaces between them. Use a grout float to spread the grout evenly and remove any excess. Allow the grout to set according to the manufacturer's instructions.

7. Seal the Tiles

Apply a penetrating sealer to the tiles and grout to protect them from moisture and stains. This will help maintain the beauty and durability of your tiled fireplace surround.

Tips for Successful Tiling:

• Use a level to ensure the tiles are laid straight and even.

• Cut tiles using a wet saw for precision and clean edges.

• Allow the mortar and grout to cure for the recommended time before using the fireplace.
