How to Replace a Thermopile on Heatilator Gas Fireplace

A thermopile is a heat-generating device that converts heat into an electric current. In a gas fireplace, the thermopile is responsible for generating the millivolt signal that powers the gas valve. If the thermopile is faulty, the gas valve will not open and the fireplace will not light.

Replacing a thermopile is a relatively simple task that can be completed in about 30 minutes. However, it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to avoid damaging the fireplace or the thermopile.

Tools and materials you will need:

Phillips screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver
New thermopile
Wire stripper
Electrical tape

Instructions:

Turn off the gas supply to the fireplace.
Remove the front panel of the fireplace. This is typically held in place by a few screws.
Locate the thermopile. It is usually located near the top of the firebox, behind the burner.
Disconnect the wires from the thermopile. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the wires off of the terminals.
Remove the old thermopile from the fireplace. It is usually held in place by a few screws.
Install the new thermopile. Be sure to orient the thermopile correctly, with the positive terminal facing towards the burner.
Connect the wires to the new thermopile. Use a wire stripper to remove about 1/2 inch of insulation from the end of each wire. Twist the exposed wire ends together and secure them with electrical tape.
Replace the front panel of the fireplace.
Turn on the gas supply to the fireplace and test the thermopile. The fireplace should light within a few seconds.

Tips:

If you are not comfortable replacing the thermopile yourself, you can call a qualified gas appliance technician.
It is a good idea to replace the thermopile every few years, even if it is not faulty.
