Faux Painting Techniques for a Brick Fireplace

A brick fireplace is a beautiful and classic addition to any home. However, real brick can be expensive and time-consuming to install. Faux painting techniques can create the look of brick without the cost or hassle.

To faux paint a brick fireplace, you will need the following materials:

Paint in two shades of red, one light and one dark
White paint
Black paint

Instructions

1. Prepare the fireplace. Clean the fireplace thoroughly and remove any dust or debris. If necessary, repair any cracks or holes with caulk. 2. Paint the fireplace white. This will create a base coat for the brick effect. 3. Draw the bricks. Use a ruler or measuring tape to draw evenly spaced lines on the fireplace. These lines will represent the mortar joints between the bricks. 4. Paint the bricks. Dip the sponge into the light red paint and dab it onto the fireplace, covering the areas that will be the bricks. Repeat with the dark red paint, dabbing it onto the bricks in a random pattern. 5. Add highlights and shadows. Use a small brush to paint white highlights on the top and sides of the bricks. Use a black paint to add shadows in the corners of the bricks and along the mortar joints. 6. Distress the bricks. Use a dry brush to lightly brush over the bricks, removing some of the paint and creating a more realistic aged look. 7. Seal the fireplace. Once the paint is dry, apply a coat of clear sealer to protect the finish.
