How to Install a Fireplace Mantel Beam
A fireplace mantel is a decorative and functional element that can add warmth and character to any room. It is a great way to frame the fireplace and create a focal point. Installing a fireplace mantel beam is not a difficult task, but it does require some basic carpentry skills. Follow these steps to install a fireplace mantel beam:
1. Determine the location of the mantel beam
The mantel beam should be installed above the fireplace opening, at a height that is comfortable for you. The standard height for a mantel beam is between 52 and 60 inches above the floor. Once you have determined the height, mark the location of the beam on the wall.
2. Cut the mantel beam to length
The mantel beam should be cut to the same length as the fireplace opening. Measure the width of the opening and add 2 inches to the measurement. This will ensure that the beam is long enough to extend 1 inch beyond each side of the opening.
3. Install the mantel beam supports
The mantel beam will need to be supported by two brackets. The brackets should be installed on the wall, at the same height as the beam. The brackets should be spaced evenly apart, so that the beam is supported evenly.
4. Install the mantel beam
Place the mantel beam on the brackets. The beam should be level and flush with the wall. Secure the beam to the brackets using wood screws.
5. Trim the mantel beam
Once the mantel beam is installed, you can trim it to the desired length. The trim should be installed around the edges of the beam, to cover the ends of the brackets. The trim can be mitered at the corners for a clean finished look.
6. Paint or stain the mantel beam
The mantel beam can be painted or stained to match the décor of your room. If you are painting the beam, be sure to use a paint that is specifically designed for wood. If you are staining the beam, be sure to use a stain that is compatible with the type of wood that the beam is made from.
