How to Resurface a Brick Fireplace

A brick fireplace is a beautiful and timeless addition to any home. However, over time, the bricks can become damaged, discolored, or outdated. If you're looking to give your fireplace a fresh look, resurfacing is a great option.

Instructions:

Step 1: Clean the Fireplace

Start by cleaning the fireplace thoroughly. Use a brick cleaner and a stiff brush to remove any dirt, grime, or soot. Rinse the fireplace with clean water and allow it to dry completely.

Step 2: Etch the Bricks

Next, you'll need to etch the bricks to create a rough surface that will help the new mortar adhere. Mix muriatic acid with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Wearing safety goggles, gloves, and a respirator, apply the acid solution to the bricks using a brush. Allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Step 3: Repair Damaged Bricks

Inspect the bricks for any cracks or damage. If you find any damaged bricks, remove them carefully and replace them with new brick pavers. Use thin-set mortar to set the new bricks in place.

Step 4: Apply Thin-Set Mortar

Spread a thin layer of thin-set mortar over the fireplace surface using a trowel. Make sure to spread the mortar evenly and press it firmly into the cracks and crevices.

Step 5: Lay the New Bricks

Start laying the new bricks on top of the thin-set mortar. Press them firmly into place and align them with the existing bricks.

Step 6: Grout the Joints

Once the new bricks are laid, mix grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. Using a grout float, apply the grout to the joints between the bricks. Press it firmly into the joints and smooth it out with the float.

Step 7: Clean and Seal

Once the grout has dried, use a sponge to clean off any excess grout. Allow the fireplace to dry completely, then apply a clear sealer to protect the surface.
